![]() Beginning a Career in Real Estate A career in real estate offers great potential. Realtors can choose from a wide array of specialties. Helping people buy and sell homes, commercial properties, farms, and land, is just the tip of the iceberg. Related industries such as mortgage banking, property management, appraisals, auctions, insurance and education also benefit from the unique skills Realtors possess. Most people begin as sales trainees. Training consists of attending classes and learning the ropes from experienced Realtors. After successful completion of classroom requirements, a licensing exam is taken. Once licensed, the Realtor must maintain continuing educational requirements in order to stay current with this ever-changing industry. Hard work and dedication are often rewarded with the satisfaction that comes with helping people—not to mention the potential for high earnings. Self-motivated individuals with people skills and perseverance can enjoy autonomy, flexible schedules and independence. Realtors can choose when and where they work. Experienced Realtors may, with additional training and certification, become brokers who own their own businesses and employ other Realtors. How SMAR can help SMAR offers the Principlesl of Real Estate course. Successful completion of this 60-hour series of classes is all that is required to take the Real Estate Licensing Exam. Once the exam is passed, the new Realtor is ready to join the Realtor Associations and begin serving the community. SMAR also offers other educational opportunities to its members throughout the year, in order to assist with meeting the continuing education requirements, as well as opportunities to volunteer within SMAR or within your community.
