Words of Encouragment for Former SMAR President, Paul Chiriaco 

We just learned that 1998 SMAR President Paul Chiriaco who is affiliated with Davis Realty, La Plata, Maryland, underwent brain surgery recently at Georgetown Hospital.  Some weeks earlier Paul sustained a head injury during a fall.  Paul is in physical therapy and making good progress.  Our thoughts and prayers are with him for a complete recovery.  Get well wishes and words of encouragement may be sent to Paul Chiriaco at his home, 5408 Well Spring Road, La Plata, MD  20646 or at Davis Realty, PO Box 2669, La Plata, MD  20646.

The “Culture” of Agriculture

            The Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission (SMADC) recently marked its 10th anniversary of developing our region’s agricultural economy and promoting profitable, market-driven farming.

             The dictionary defines ‘culture’ as socially transmitted behavior patterns. While SMADC’s branding campaign (www.SoMarylandSoGood.com) and its other initiatives have resulted in a new picture of agriculture, the ‘culture’ of agriculture, i.e., ensuring that today’s agricultural heritage is passed on to future generations is now paramount.

            Land-Link is a tool to socially transmit valuable information. At its foundation, it is a database to link those with land to farm with those who are seeking opportunities to farm. Its other layers allow for on-line mentoring and an active forum for sharing of information.

            Land-link programs have proven their worth across the country and SMADC surveys indicate that the need for a robust program in our region is needed and wanted.

            The tool is currently active, but needs engagement from stakeholders. Log on to www.marylandfarmlink.com now to register (free!) and begin listing, posting and mentoring.

Set to launch soon, it is imperative that subscribers download the latest version of Adobe Flash Player 10 or above prior to launch in order to use the following features:

MAR Rookie REALTOR® of the Year Award

The Rookie REALTOR® of the Year Award recognizes a REALTOR® in the business four years or fewer, who has demonstrated excellence in knowledge, work production, civic activity, and service to their local, state, and/or national Associations.

Applications MUST be signed by the Broker/Manager of the nominee for consideration. Nominations can be made through local Associations or directly to MAR.

MAR Community Service Award

(not to be confused with the Community Service and REALTOR® Excellence (CARE) Award given to Local Associations in recognition for aggregate community service and charitable actions of all the Association’s embers over a one-year period).   

The MAR Community Service Award honors individual REALTOR® members who give unselfishly of their time to assist the communities in which they live. There is no limit to the number of entries that can be submitted from one Association or firm in this category. Nominees may be submitted to the local Association or to MAR directly.
