Who We Are

The Southern Maryland Association of Realtors®, Inc. was formed in 1971 by consolidating the mutual needs of the Charles, St Mary's and Calvert County Realtor® communities. The Board of Realtors® became an Association of Realtors®, (SMAR), a few years later; steadily growing from a few hundred members to over 1,980. It is dedicated to providing services to both the membership and the public they serve, enabling Realtors® to have a strong voice in protecting and promoting property rights.

The Association serves members by providing uniform lock box services, technical support, grievance and arbitration forums, political action, representation at local, state and national forums, and by coordinating a host of educational, recreational, charitable, and awards activities. SMAR provides opportunities to develop and maintain personal and business relationships among people serving in related industries, as well as the surrounding neighborhoods.

The Southern Maryland Association of Realtors® is part of the Metropolitan Regional Information System (MRIS) Multiple Listing Service, which provides the computerized listings database system for the wider metropolitan area. Membership is available to Realtors®, as well as providers of support services. SMAR welcomes new members who are seeking to become part of this dynamic Association. We provide training and support for those working to begin a career in real estate.

Much more than just a trade Association for the benefit of Realtors®, SMAR has become an asset to the larger Southern Maryland region. In 2002 and again in 2005, the Southern Maryland Association was honored to receive the prestigious C.A.R.E. (Charity And Realtor® Excellence) award by the Maryland Association of Realtors® in recognition of the dedication and hard work by SMAR volunteers to improve lives in the communities they serve. Member activities include volunteer support and fundraising on behalf of organizations such as Safety Through Songs, Just Say No to Drugs, the American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, the American Cancer Society, Christmas in April, poster and essay contests at local schools, book donations, the Center for Children, Children's Hospital, and food drives on behalf of local women's shelters to name just a few. The public further benefits from the Association's enforcement of the Realtor® Code of Ethics among member Realtors®, and by educational programs designed to enable interested parties to begin or enhance a career in real estate.
