HUGHESVILLE, Md. -- Please be advised that the first compliance deadline for the Building Energy Performance Standards (BEPS) legislation as required under the Climate Solutions Now Act of 2022 is coming up on September 30th.

As part of the BEPS legislation, covered buildings with a gross square footage of 35,000 or more must track and report their energy use and eventually cut emissions to help the state reach net-zero by 2040.  The first benchmarking deadline was September 1, 2025; however, the Maryland Department of the Environment recently issued a notice that the benchmarking deadline has been extended to September 30, 2025.

Owners of buildings with a gross square footage of 35,000 or more (excluding parking areas) will be required to comply with BEPS regulations, which include immediate energy usage benchmarking and eventual emissions standards requirements. To get started with benchmarking, please employ the following resources:

️View the Building Energy Performance Standards (BEPS) legislation homepage.
️Check if your property is covered on the BEPS Portal
Not listed but 35,000+ sq. ft.? You may still need to comply.
️Request a Unique Building ID (UBID) through the BEPS “Get Started” webpage

️ Why it matters: Failure to comply could lead to penalties, fines, and being out of compliance with state law.

️Start by benchmarking: this means entering your building’s utility bills (electricity, gas, etc.) into the state’s online system to measure and compare your energy performance.

️Need more time? Email [email protected] with your UBID, reason for delay, and expected reporting date.
