The History of SMAR®
The history of the Southern Maryland Association of Realtors® (SMAR) began in 1971. The National Association of REALTORS® fully recognized the Southern Maryland Board of Realtors® on January 25, 1971, and SMAR was later incorporated in Maryland on September 15, 1971.
The original authorizing founders of the membership corporation were:
- Allen J. Neave of Waldorf, Maryland
- Harry Leonard of Great Mills, Maryland
- E. Steuart Vaughan of Prince Frederick, Maryland
- William B. Matthews of Waldorf, Maryland

The original location of the Board of Realtors® was a P.O. Box in Waldorf, Maryland and the resident agent was William B. Matthews.
The first Board of Directors consisted of six individuals:
- Allen J. Neave of Waldorf, Maryland
- Harry Leonard of Great Mills, Maryland
- E. Steuart Vaughan of Prince Frederick, Maryland
- William B. Matthews of Waldorf, Maryland
- Mary Louise Breland of Solomons, Maryland
- Carl R. Baldus, Jr. of La Plata, Maryland
In a duly convened Board of Directors meeting and a subsequent duly convened meeting of the general membership on March 3, 1989, the Southern Maryland Board of Realtors® amended its name to be the Southern Maryland Association of Realtors®. SMAR would steadily growing from a few hundred members to over 1,800 in the following years. Our members are comprised of residential and commercial REALTORS®, brokers, property managers, appraisers, affiliate businesses, and others who participate in the real estate industry across Southern Maryland. Our work consists of assisting our growing membership, promoting homeownership, and protecting private property rights throughout Calvert, Charles and St. Mary's County.
